PRO TIP: use "Shuffle Questions" and "Shuffle Word Bank" buttons, and then "Print" button to create as many unique versions of this test as you need.
PRO TIP: uncheck the "Show the Word Bank" checkbox below the test to remove the word bank.
1. Enter the title of the fill in the blank test into the “Test Title” field.
2. If you have some specific instructions for your test takers about the given test, you can provide them in the field “Instructions”. Otherwise, this field can be simply left blank.
3. Enter sentences of your fill in the blank test into text fields in the “Sentences” area of the test form, one sentence per field.
4. Under each sentence, select all words that should be replaced with blanks in the generated test. You can select as many words as required in each sentence by just clicking on these words below the sentence.
5. Add more fields for entering sentences if you need more than five of them to be processed by the fill in the blank generator. To do this, click on the “Add Fields” button. To speed this process up when you need to expand the test with dozens more questions, enter the required number of additional fields into the box next to the “Add Fields” button before clicking on it, this way you won’t need to use this button many times.
6. Click on the “Generate Test” button to start the automated fill in the blank test generation process.
1. Usually the fill in the blank test generation takes only a few seconds. After that, you will see the created test and will be able to use it according to your needs.
2. Your test takers will be able to specify their name and the date this test is taken on using the respective fields, “Name” and “Date”, which are added automatically by the fill in the blank generator at the top of the test. If you prefer not to have such elements on your test page, you can remove them by unchecking the “Show “Name” and “Date” line” checkbox at the left below the test.
3. Below the test title and instructions (if they were entered on the previous stage), there are all your sentences entered on the previous screen, with the blanks instead of selected words. All the blanks across the test have the same width, in order to make it impossible to guess possible correct answer based only on the expected word length, which can happen when the width of the blank is tied to the length of the expected word.
4. Under the sentences with blanks to fill, there is a Word Bank. It contains all the words that were removed from the original sentences and replaced with blanks. After these words were added to the Word Bank, they were additionally shuffled randomly, so that their order in the Word Bank cannot unintentionally hint correct answers when the test taker fills in the blanks.
5. The Word Bank can be removed from the test by unchecking the checkbox “Show the Word Bank” below the test. It’s a good idea to not show the Word Bank if you want to make your test more difficult to take.
6. You can additionally change the word order in the Word Bank by clicking on the “Shuffle Word Bank” button below the test. It can be used as many times as you need, each time the fill in the blank generator will be providing a new result for the Word Bank.
7. If you’d like to create several custom copies of this printable test, consider using the “Shuffle Questions” button available in the left bottom corner. When you click on it, the program will automatically change the order of sentences in the test. Similarly to the “Shuffle Word Bank” button, the “Shuffle Questions” button can also be used unlimited number of times, each time creating a new version of the sentence order.
8. Select the page size (A4 or Letter) and click on the “Print” button to print the test out on paper or save it as a PDF document. To save it as a PDF document, after clicking on the “Print” button, in the “Printer” dropdown menu select the printer option that contains the word “PDF”.
9. Additionally, instead of printing the test or saving it to the PDF document, you can simply copy it to the clipboard and paste into a regular text document in your Microsoft Word or Google Docs. It will give you unlimited flexibility to edit the test before printing it.
10. If you are not satisfied with the test generation results, click on the “Try Again” button to get back to the previous step of the fill in the blank generator. All previously entered sentences, test title, and instructions will be already present in the form, so you won’t need to start from scratch. If you need to start from a blank form, just refresh the page in your web browser (F5 button, if you use a computer keyboard).
